SKY PILOT
Sage Kotsenburg collaborated with the K2 product design and engineering team and wanted to work on a new snowboard designed to ride on technical, woody, and soft terrain. The idea was to be able to pivot and unlock the tail freely to allow the rider to follow the natural contours of the terrain. The team went to the drawing board (read: very expensive computer software), produced prototype 1... and off we went racing on what would become the Sky Pilot.
By tweaking shapes, experimenting with different fiberglass layups, and playing with carbon additives, K2 found the sweet spot, and we began refining the best-fitting tool.
The Sky Pilot is built around a slightly wider-than-normal footprint and features a medium flex that's right in the middle. It incorporates K2's 3DContour in the tip and tail, lifting the contact points off the snow and providing the pivotability Sage sought in deeper snow. This spoon in the tip and tail works in tandem with our new carbon Y-beam, adding dynamism and stability in the tail and transmitting energy to the contact points in the nose. This gives you the stability and edge pressure you want, without unnecessary torsional stiffness.
Believing that everyone should be able to experience the wonders of the mountain, the Sky Pilot was designed for all genders: sizes, flex profiles, and waist widths adapted to smaller feet.
